What is GST?

  • Simply put, Goods and Service Tax (‘GST’), considered to be the biggest indirect tax reform in the history of India, is a comprehensive tax proposed to be levied on supply of goods and services with a mechanism for allowance of input tax credit paid at each stage of supply.
  •  GST, which is generally described as ‘one tax for one nation’ will subsume all existing indirect taxes such as Excise duty, Service Tax, CVD, VAT, Entertainment Tax at State level, Entry Tax etc. and only one tax i.e. GST will be levied and collected on value additions at each stage of supply of goods and services at national level.
  • GST is also said to be a destination based tax wherein the tax revenue would be earned by the state where goods and services are consumed rather than the place where they are produced or from where services are being provided. The place of supply/ consumption will be determined by place of supply determining parameters provided under the GST Law. There would be dual levy of GST i.e. on all inter-state supplies, Integrated Goods and Service Tax (‘IGST’) would be levied and on all intra-state supplies, Central Goods and Service Tax (‘CGST’) and State Goods and Service Tax (‘SGST’) would be levied.

How to register for GST?

  • Sellers who already have a Value Added Tax Number (VAT TIN), service tax registration number and excise registration number can enroll themselves in GST from the portal
  • Business sellers/individual sellers who currently do not have the aforementioned numbers will have to obtain fresh registration under the GST regime.
  • Please consult your tax advisor to get yourself enrolled in GST.

What next?

  • In case you have not enrolled in GST, please initiate the process at the earliest. While we will share more information with you on an ongoing basis, please consult your tax advisor for guidance in this regard.
